Shaykh Dr. Moaaz Safwat, Dean
Shaykh Dr. Moaaz Safwat Mahmoud Ahmed Salem, a world-renowned scholar in Quran Studies, serves as the Dean of Dar al-Burhan Academy, where his leadership ensures the faculty upholds the highest standards in Quranic education and character development. In addition to his scholarly expertise, Shaykh Dr. Moaaz plays a key role in the robust institutional management of the academy, overseeing curriculum development, faculty training, and administrative operations to maintain excellence in all aspects of the academy’s mission.

As the Dean of the academy, Shaykh Moaaz holds the faculty and its students to the highest expectations, conducts regular progress monitoring, adjusts teaching approaches as needed, and empowers students to take ownership of their journey in Quran recitation and memorization.
Shaykh Moaaz memorized the Jazariya with an Ijaza before reaching the age of four years old at the hands of the renowned Muqri Shaykh Ayman Suwayd. His journey in memorization continued with his father Shaykh Safwat Mahmoud Salem, until he completed it at the age of thirteen in the Sacred Precinct of Makkah. He furthered his studies by meeting with and studying at the feet of various scholars from across the globe, receiving Ijazat from some of the most credible sources. By the age of seventeen, Shaykh Moaaz was teaching advanced students and holding large classes in Quran recitation and Tajweed, in addition to attaining several teaching licenses from leading scholars in Quran and Hadith.
Shaykh Moaaz went on to complete a PhD in Qur’anic Recitations from the Department of Qira’āt in the Faculty of Da’wah and Usul Al-Dīn at Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah. He also served as a Lecturer at Imam Al-Shatibi Institute from 2006 to 2016 in different departments. Shaykh Moaaz is a Member of the Curriculum Committee for Tafsir and Quranic Sciences Diploma and has hosted several televised programs on the history of the Quran and recitation.

Principal | Hifz Diploma Program
Qari Misbah Taqiuddin is the Principal of the Hifz Diploma Program and a founding member of Dar al-Burhan Academy. His work at the Academy has progressed from Academic Supervisor to Lead Instructor and now Principal, where he oversees students, faculty, educational standards, and the day-to-day academic implementation of the Hifz program, with a focus on continually strengthening the quality of Qur’anic education. Alongside his work in Islamic education, he has a background in accounting and continues to work in the field. Qari Misbah’s relationship with the Qur’an is rooted in his own experience as an adult student of memorization. After completing his Hifz later in life, he recited the entire Qur’an to Shaykh Ahmed Saad al-Azhari (UK), receiving an Ijazah in the recitation of Imam ʿĀṣim (Hafs and Shu'bah) through a prestigious chain of transmission to the Prophet ﷺ. He also received an Ijazah to transmit and teach the renowned Tajweed text Matn al-Jazariyyah. He continues to advance his studies in Qira’at under Shaykh Moaaz Safwat through the study of al-Shāṭibiyyah and al-Durrah and pursuing an Ijazah in the Ten Minor Qira’at. His broader Islamic studies have included Arabic, Fiqh, and other Islamic sciences, along with authorizations in the transmission of Hadith from a number of renowned collections. Alongside his leadership responsibilities, Qari Misbah continues to teach introductory Tajweed, Ijazah preparation, Matn al-Jazariyyah, and introductory Hanafi Fiqh, while regularly leading Tarawih prayers. His experience as a student, teacher, and educational leader continues to shape his work with the students and instructors of Dar al-Burhan.
Quran Instructor (Male Students)
Shaykh Abdul-Basit Sharif is a dedicated Quran instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy, bringing together a strong foundation in Quranic studies, Islamic scholarship, and several years of teaching experience. His passion for the Quran and commitment to helping students grow in their recitation and memorization are at the heart of his approach to teaching. Born and raised in Canada, Shaykh Abdul-Basit completed his Hifz at Rexdale Jame Masjid in Toronto and earned his Bachelor of Islamic Theology and Jurisprudence from Al-Rashid Islamic Institute in Cornwall, Ontario. He has since served in various schools and mosques across the Greater Toronto Area, including Jame Makki Masjid and Darul Quran, where his experience has included developing Islamic curricula and facilitating Quran memorization programs. At Dar al-Burhan, Shaykh Abdul-Basit guides students in their Quranic recitation and memorization with a dedicated and encouraging approach. His teaching is inspired by the Prophetic saying: “The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”
Quran Instructor (Male Students)
Shaykh Humza Asad is an engaging Quran instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy, with a strong foundation in Quran memorization, traditional Islamic scholarship, and youth education. His approachable nature and ability to connect with students complement his commitment to their growth in recitation and memorization. Shaykh Humza completed his memorization of the Quran at Scarborough Muslim Association’s Jame Abu Bakr Siddique Masjid. He then pursued six years of traditional Islamic studies at Jamiyyah Islamiyyah Abu Bakr, graduating with a Bachelor of Islamic Theology and Sciences. He later completed a specialization in Fiqh (Ifta) at Jamiah Qasimul Uloom and is currently pursuing further specialization in Hadith Sciences. Shaykh Humza has several years of experience teaching Quran, Tajweed, and Islamic Studies and has been actively involved in youth mentorship and community education throughout the Greater Toronto Area. At Dar al-Burhan, he brings an encouraging and relatable approach to Quran instruction, building positive connections with students while guiding them towards greater confidence and proficiency.
Remote Quran Instructor (Male Students)
Shaykh Bayan Hashem serves as the Remote Quran Instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy, where his exceptional ability to engage students makes his virtual presence feel as though he is physically in the room with them. With over a decade of experience and a deep passion for the Quran, Shaykh Bayan uses engaging teaching strategies that foster active learning and a strong connection with his students despite the online format. Shaykh Bayan graduated with a Diploma in the ten minor recitations from the prestigious Imam Al-Shatibi Institute in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He received multiple individual Ijazat in various recitations before attaining an Ijazah in the seven minor recitations. Shaykh Bayan has also served as an Imam of Tarawih during the blessed month of Ramadan for more than a decade. Beyond Quran recitation, he teaches Tajweed and provides instruction in Matn Tuhfat al-Atfal and the Jazariyah. Shaykh Bayan also holds a bachelor’s degree in Petroleum and Mining Engineering from Suez Canal University. At Dar al-Burhan, he combines his extensive Quranic training and teaching experience with an engaging approach that allows students to benefit from attentive and effective instruction even in a remote learning environment.
Remote Quran Instructor (Male Students)
Shaykh Mahmoud Fadlallah is a specialist in Qur’anic studies, Qirā’āt, and the Islamic sciences, with a strong academic foundation in Arabic language and Sharīʿah disciplines. He graduated from the Faculty of Dār al-ʿUlūm and continued his religious studies at the Riwwāq of Islamic and Arabic Sciences at Al-Azhar Al-Sharīf, specializing in Fiqh and Uṣūl al-Fiqh. After passing advanced placement examinations, he was admitted directly into the sixth and final level of the advanced program. Shaykh Mahmoud holds multiple ijāzāt in Qur’anic recitation, including the Ten Minor Recitations via the method of Jamʿ bil-Waqf and riwāyat Ḥafṣ through multiple ṭuruq of al-Ṭayyibah. His Qur’anic studies include formal certification through the Imām al-Shāṭibī Institute and study circles connected to Al-Masjid al-Nabawī, and he is nearing completion of advanced studies in the Ten Major Qirā’āt. He also holds ijāzāt in the transmission of recognized collections of authentic ḥadīth. Teaching Qur’an since 2016, Shaykh Mahmoud has guided numerous students through complete memorization programs and granted ijāzah to students in multiple Qur’anic riwāyāt. From 2020 to 2024, he taught the Ten Minor Qirā’āt to non-Arabic-speaking students at the Al-Azhar Sciences Academy in Malaysia. He has also been officially accredited as a Khaṭīb by the Egyptian Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs. Shaykh Mahmoud continues his postgraduate academic studies alongside his teaching and Qur’anic instruction, with a commitment to preserving and transmitting the Qur’anic tradition through traditional sanad-based learning and structured academic study.

Ustadha Azza Mando is a highly experienced and senior instructor for female students at Dar al-Burhan Academy. Her nurturing character and years of meticulous care in mastering the recitation of the Quran makes her an expert instructor who understands how to coach her students gradually towards mastery.
Ustadha Azza's journey with the Quran began in the blessed lands of Sham (the Levant) where she was born and raised. Upon completing her memorization of the Quran with an Ijaza in Hafs from Asim of Shatibiyya, she was tasked with teaching Quran and Tajweed at Masjid al-Furqan in the city of Homs, Syria. Ustadha Yumna Muhammad, a distinguished instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy for Quran Studies, is renowned for her expertise and dedication to Islamic education. Born in Egypt and raised in Jeddah, she excelled academically and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies from Sana’a University in Yemen. After marriage, she completed her memorization of the Quran and advanced her studies in Tajweed and the Jazariyyah text. She was awarded an ijazah in Quranic recitation from Shaykha Umm Moaaz Nabeela Al-Marabji, certified in the recitation of Imam 'Asim through the narrations of Shu'bah and Hafs. Additionally, she earned an ijazah in the Jazariyyah from Shaykh Moaaz Safwat. Currently pursuing a master’s degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and its Principles through the American University in Minnesota, Ustadha Yumna continues to deepen her academic and spiritual knowledge. She has also attended study sessions on key hadith texts, including Al-Muwatta, Al-Arba'in Al-Nawawiyyah, and Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyyah. Known for her disciplined and passionate approach, Ustadha Yumna inspires students at Dar al-Burhan Academy with her knowledge and commitment to the Quran. Outside her teaching, she maintains a strong interest in fitness, particularly weightlifting and other rigorous physical activities, exemplifying her perseverance and balanced lifestyle.
Remote Quran Instructor (Female Students)
Ustadha Inaam Ziad Al-Turkmani, serving as the Remote Quran Instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy, holds three Ijazas in the Hafs recitation from Asim through Al-Shatibiyyah, along with authorizations in the ten minor Qira'at via Al-Shatibiyyah and Al-Durrah from Al-Fath Islamic Institute. She also has received an authorization to teach the Jazariya in Tajweed from the renowned Islamic College of Shaykh Ahmad Kuftaro (Abu al Nur).
Her Quranic journey commenced in the blessed lands of Sham, where she was born and raised. Guidance Counsellor (Male Students)
Qari Humza Ali serves as the guidance counsellor for the male students at Dar al-Burhan, bringing a foundation in psychology and spiritual care to his role. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behavior from McMaster University. He is currently completing his master’s degree in Psychotherapy and Spiritual Care Studies at the University of Toronto. His comprehensive training enables him to provide students with religiously sensitive and compassionate guidance tailored to their academic and personal needs.
In addition to his psychotherapy qualifications, Qari Humza has a background in Islamic studies. He completed his Quran memorization at age 15 and received ijaza in the narration of Hafs during his teens. He is currently deepening his studies in qira’at with Shaykh Moaaz Safwat, from whom he also received an ijaza to teach and transmit al-Jazariyya.

Guidance Counsellor (Female Students)
Ustadha Naeemah Martinez serves as the compassionate and insightful guidance counsellor at Dar al-Burhan Academy. Raised in the Bahamas, she attended Queen's College, a prestigious private school where she excelled academically. At the age of 17, she embraced Islam, a transformative decision that charted the course of her life. She pursued journalism studies at Ryerson College in Toronto, Ontario, before embarking on a journey of Islamic scholarship alongside her husband. Together, they traveled to Damascus, where she studied at the renowned Abu Nur Islamic Institute, specializing in the Prophetic Biography (Seerah) and immersing herself in the life and legacy of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. While raising four children, Ustadha Naeemah continued to pursue knowledge, supporting her husband’s studies and benefiting from the mentorship of esteemed female scholars. She later lived in the remote Atlas Mountains of Morocco, learning alongside the righteous wives connected to the Madrasa of Sidi Shaykh Muhammad al-Habib. Ustadha Naeemah’s dedication to balancing family life with scholarship shaped her into an experienced homeschooler, providing invaluable support to parents navigating similar paths. Today, her children are accomplished adults, continuing to benefit from her wisdom and guidance. At Dar al-Burhan Academy, Ustadha Naeemah is known for her profound empathy, patience, and insight, making her a trusted and inspiring mentor. Her unwavering commitment to the well-being and development of her students has solidified her as a cornerstone of the academy’s support system.
Student Coordinator & Transport Facilitator
Dr. Abdul Mukeem Sarfaraz is trained as a medical doctor in his home country, and his long love for the Quran and its people inspired him to join Dar al-Burhan. Affectionately known as “uncle” amongst the students, he dedicates his entire day in the service of students and staff alike. From driving the school shuttle, to supervising lunch and activities for the male students, his passion and care is felt throughout the school as he goes above and beyond his formal roles. His dedication serves dually as an example to the students at Dar al-Burhan adding positively to the culture of service and giving to others. Beyond Dar al-Burhan, Abdul Mukeem Sarfaraz devotes much of his time to his children and grandchildren many of whom are dedicated to learning and teaching the sacred Islamic sciences.

2022-2023 Tarbiyah Instructor
Ustadha Zakiyah Gangat served as an Islamic Studies instructor at Dar al-Burhan Academy from 2022 to 2023, where she played a pivotal role in supporting the growth and development of female students. She earned her Shahadah al-Alimiyyah from a traditional Islamic seminary in Gujarat, India, and went on to complete a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology, Health Studies, and Religions from the University of Toronto.
